Will You Pass the AFT?
The Combat Field Test (CFT): Can You Beat the 30-Minute Clock?
Self-check: can you do each of these today, in ACUs and boots, in this order?
- 1-Mile RunRun it at your own pace — walking allowed, but the clock never stops.
- 30 Dead-Stop Push-UpsChest to ground, hands fully off the deck each rep. Rest any time — but reset cleanly.
- 100-Meter SprintFull 100 m, any pace.
- 16 × 40-lb Sandbag LiftsGround to a 65-inch platform, one bag at a time, any method. Dropped bag = reload it.
- 50-m Water-Can CarryTwo full 5-gal cans (40 lb each). Set them down if you must — dragging or dumping ends the test.
- 50-m Movement Lane25 m low crawl (forearms + lower legs), then 25 m of 3–5 second rushes, ending prone.
- 1-Mile Run (Again)Clock stops when you cross the line. Total for all 7 events must be ≤ 30:00.
Applies to 24 combat specialties — Infantry, Armor, Special Forces, Combat Engineers (12D), Field Artillery, EOD (89D), and Divers (89E) among them. Combat-MOS soldiers take both the CFT and the AFT (350 minimum). Active/AGR: one record CFT + one record AFT per year, ≥ 4 months apart.

What Happens If You Fail the AFT
Flag
Failing a record AFT (total < 300/350, or any event < 60) starts a flag — promotions and favorable actions suspended.
Reconditioning
You're enrolled in remedial training. Since June 2026, Guard & Reserve failures carry adverse action under AR 600-8-2.
Retest Clock
Active/AGR: retest within 90 days. Traditional Guard/Reserve: 180 days. The clock is the whole game.
The Fork
Pass → flag removed. Fail again → separation proceedings, or forced MOS reclass for combat soldiers below standard.
AFT & CFT FAQ
What is the AFT and what replaced the ACFT?
The Army Fitness Test (AFT) replaced the ACFT as the Army's test of record effective June 1, 2025. It has 5 scored events — 3-Rep Max Deadlift, Hand-Release Push-Ups, Sprint-Drag-Carry, Plank, and the Two-Mile Run — worth up to 100 points each. You need 300 total to pass (350 for combat MOS), with at least 60 in every event. The Standing Power Throw was dropped.
What is the CFT and who has to take it?
The Combat Field Test (Army Directive 2026-07, effective April 17, 2026) is a pass/fail, 30-minute, 7-event continuous test for 24 combat specialties. No points, no age or sex scaling — you either finish under 30 minutes or you don't. Diagnostic year runs through April 2027; record testing starts April 17, 2027.
What happens if I fail the AFT?
You're flagged, enrolled in reconditioning, and must pass a retest within 90 days (180 for traditional Guard/Reserve). A second failure can start separation proceedings. Combat-MOS soldiers who can't meet combat standards face reclassification. Details are in the timeline above.
Can I use an alternate cardio event?
Yes — the 2.5-mile walk, 12 km stationary bike, 1 km swim, and 5 km row are Go/No-Go alternates with their own time standards by age and sex (see the official tables). Note: soldiers who need an alternate for any AFT event are not eligible for the CFT.
How often do I take these tests?
Under the current DoD-wide framework, Active/AGR and RC soldiers on 365+ day orders take one record CFT and one record AFT per year, at least 4 months apart. Traditional Guard/Reserve take one record test per year, alternating AFT and CFT — the 2027 record test is the CFT.
